Evan Flory Barnes: Acknowledgement of a Celebration—World Premier

I serendipitously stumbled upon Evan Flory-Barnes Jazz Trio at Lucid a few months ago. I have seen Nicole Sasala's The Asterisk Project many times. Last month we saw the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Yet...

I hadn't imagined how powerful it would be too see all of these vastly different worlds of expression (plus a few more) collide, fuse, and mold together. The collaboration forms an entirely new work of art where the oneness is just as present and relevant as each individuals' performance. A world where everyone has their own soundtrack, their own interpretation, their own movement, yet they are all composed together to create a beautiful thing we call life. As the title suggest it truly deserves an, Acknowledgement of a Celebration: Inheritance, Authenticity and Healing.

This world premier was part of the EarShot Jazz Festival 2009:
The Seattle bassist and composer presents his large-ensemble fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and classical music, complete with modern dancers and freestyle break dancers. Flory-Barnes is excited to premiere the large chamber work, a snapshot of the abundance of inspiration that can thread artistic mediums together, right here in Seattle. The premiere of Acknowledgement of a Celebration features 35 musicians and ten dancers set to Flory-Barnes’s new compositions.
Flory-Barnes performs with an inclusive passion and expressive intensity, as though he were completely immersed in music. He regularly brings his trio, The Teaching, to the Lucid jazz club in the University District for an open community jam and hang. The Teaching appeared in the 2008 Earshot Jazz Festival at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center.

Seeing New Landscapes

Dan Corson’s reconfigured Oscillating Field. Photos by Blank Space.

I just love seeing pubic art in the neighborhood. Dan Corson’s reconfigured Oscillating Field opened last night. It is located on the corner of Denny and Broadway, in Capitol Hill. Funded by Sound Transit to keep the site of the future Capitol Hill light rail station active until construction begins after the first of the year. I have to admit I was a bit bummed that we had to view it through a fence for the opening. I am looking forward to seeing the green rod textures in the daylight. It will be up through the end of November.

Science on Wheels

While looking for opportunities to apply our installation/exhibit design skills to Children Hospitals or Doctor offices I found this fun mobile.

Seattle Children's launches a traveling Science Adventure Lab. Their mission is to deliver interactive learning that inspire new passions for the sciences and keep kid's healthy.

"The hands-on activities on the Science Adventure Lab are designed to not only engage students and give them a deeper level of understanding of science, but also to show its relevance for everyday life."
—Amanda Jones, PhD, Director

I would love to hear a follow-up of how this is working, and to see the inside of this fun mobile. It reminds me a lot of Cosi on Wheels, that I had as a kid in Ohio.
